Tamas (which translates to “Darkness”) is one of the most powerful and influential works of modern Hindi literature. First published in 1973, the novel provides a gritty, heartbreaking, and deeply moving account of the communal politics, violence, and human tragedy surrounding the Partition of India in 1947. Sahni was awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for this masterpiece in 1975, and it was famously adapted into an acclaimed television film/miniseries by Govind Nihalani.
